How to Renew SSL Certificate on ZeroSSL

ZeroSSL provides free and paid SSL Certificates and its different pricing plans can be viewed at the following link:

As you can see at the above link, the pricing plans include Free, Basic, Premium, and Business Plans. In the Free plan, you can create up to 3 SSL certificates. The duration of each certificate will be 90 days.

Once you have created your account on ZeroSSL, Login to your account with your email and password. You will be routed to the Certificates page that will show the expiry date of your current SSL certificate.

  • Click Renew button at the end of the row
  • In Renew Certificate page, under Domains, the domain name will be selected by default. Therefore, click Next Step
  • Under Validity, 90-Day Certificate will be selected by default. Hence, click Next Step
  • Under CSR & Contact, Auto-Generate CSR will be enabled. Therefore, click Next Step
  • Under Finalize Your Order, Free plan will be selected by default. Therefore, click Next Step
  • You will receive the message: ‘Your certificate has been created and is ready for domain verification’ on the next page Verify Domain
  • Under Verification Method for Domain, select the option HTTP File Upload
  • Download your Auth File on your Computer/Laptop
  • The downloaded file will be a .txt Text File
  • Now open your domain hosting cPanel
  • Select File Manager in cPanel
  • Click the plus sign before public_html folder
  • Click the plus sign before .well-known folder and select pki-validation folder
  • Click Upload, click Select File, and select the .txt Text File saved on your Computer/Laptop
  • When the File Upload is completed, go to Verify Domain page on ZeroSSL,
  • Click on the link mentioned in Step 3: ‘Make sure your file is available under the following link:’
  • If 3 rows of data are displayed, then you have uploaded the file successfully. Click Next Step
  • Click Verify Domain button
  • You will receive the message ‘Your certificate has been issued and is ready for installation. To continue, please follow the steps below.’ on Install Certificate page
  • Under Download Certificate, download your certificates
  • There will be three files ca_bundle.crt, certificate.crt, and private.key.
  • Go to cPanel, and under Security, click SSL/TLS
  • Click Manage SSL sites.
  • Under Domain, select your domain name
  • Copy the contents of private.key file and paste them in Private Key (KEY) box
  • Copy the contents of certificate.crt file and paste them in Certificate (CRT) box
  • Copy the contents of ca_bundle.crt file and paste them in Certificate Authority Bundle: (CABUNDLE) box
  • Then click Install Certificate. You will receive the message ‘You have successfully updated the SSL website’s certificate.’ Click OK
  • In ZeroSSL, under Install Certificate, click Check Installation
  • A mesage will be shown: ‘Congratulations, you have successfully installed your SSL certificate and your site is now secured.’
